What I actually do

"What do you do?" should be a simple question. For me it isn't, because the honest answer changes depending on the week.

I've built Shopify themes, fixed WordPress sites, written Python for data work, done SEO, and sat in enough IT consulting meetings to know what actually helps. One job title covers maybe a quarter of it.

So I use four verbs instead.

Design

Deciding what a thing should be, so that whoever lands on it knows within a few seconds whether they're in the right place. Most of the work is removing things.

Build

Where ideas become something you can click. Shopify and Next.js mostly, WordPress when it's the right call (it still often is), plus the integrations between systems that nobody screenshots but everyone feels.

Analyze

Data work: pipelines, dashboards, scraping, modeling. I care less about charts than about knowing which change is worth making next. SQL, R, and Python do most of the lifting here.

Advise

Sometimes a company doesn't need anything built. They need someone to look at their setup and say plainly what they'd change. I keep these engagements short and put recommendations in writing.
